It is time to start a broader discussion.

Silence will take over Finland today. Our country has been the scene of an immense tragedy, once again. This has happened before in the United States with a population of 300 million but in Finland - with a 60 times smaller population - twice within one year. Jokela school shooting with its nine victims last autumn was cited as the most severe act of violence in Finnish schools throughout the history. Today the similar event in Kauhajoki raises a lot of issues. “How is this possible” is probably a very common question in Finnish homes today.
Finland is quite a violent country when measuring domestic violence, and lately there has been a lot of discussion about the increasing aggression and societal sickness especially among the youth. Finland experienced a vast economical depression in the 1990s and budget cuts of that time can still be noted in the schools as well as in the health and mental care services. The estimates of young people outside the reach of education and labour are very high - in some sources even 100 thousand which would mean 2 % of the whole population and a very high percentage of the youth themselves. In addition to the Finnish tradition of taciturnity where fathers cannot even hug their sons and asking for help is not allowed we have started to enter a truely postmodernist and individualistic competition society. Nobody cares and despite the new virtual connections people are isolated, maybe more than ever before. More dense living has not guaranteed closer relationships.
And was something learned from the last time? The Jokela case was tackled too fast. The headlines shouted of the dangers of PC games and widely spread gun ownership, parents were blamed but no real openings were made. At some point the Finns started to be worried about the reputation of our country and angry comments were sent to the Times magazine. “This could have happened anywhere else.” Could it have? And does it matter if it could have? Something here seems to be very wrong, more than only the lack of health and mental health care services in schools and elsewhere. I wish this time there will be a broad discussion about the causes why we have ended here and how we can prevent this from happening in the future. About why people - especially the youth - are feeling worse all the time. Every individual from normal citizens to politicians and company managers should participate the discussion. Let’s not forget this and outsource it to the police.
